The first year of our marriage was really a struggle. We were trying to understand each other and also accept each other’s differences. I remember that we had frequent misunderstandings that wanted to mar our marriage so at a point we agreed to get a marriage counsellor.
We had quite a few names on our minds but in the end, we agreed that we make Pastor Adenike Olumide-Emmanuel our marriage counselor and this has been one of the best decisions we made in our marriage.
She is always there for us. She is so real and she says it the way it is. At some point, our marriage was about hitting the rocks but we thank God that through her, we were able to trace ourselves back.

Going into marriage, after courting for 5 years, I never expected that marriage was going to be a bed of roses but I never expected it to be so different from courtship. I thought it was courtship continued in a more binding way, that nothing was really going to change.
When I realized I wasn’t always going to have my way, I wasn’t always going to get that apology even when I knew I was the one who did wrong when we couldn’t agree on anything, we couldn’t talk about our differences without it becoming a fight, I began to see marriage as a scam and trap.
It got so unbearable that we couldn’t settle our differences on our own so, we both learned that act of letting it slide for peace to reign which of course became a disaster, as it led to pent-up anger which led to outbursts at the slightest provocation. At this point, we could no longer see the happiness or joy in our marriage, and thoughts of divorce started creeping in. This was after two years of marriage.
Knowing that somewhere in our hearts we still loved each other but we just couldn’t communicate properly, it was always a competition on who was right and who was wrong which led to us keeping our vulnerability from each other. It took away the life from our marriage and we knew we had to get help.
I discussed with my husband on getting a counselor and was excited when he agreed to it knowing he is a really private person and doesn’t like to share his feelings, this was good news to me which meant to me that he would do anything to make us work.
We deliberated together and looked for the person we had the utmost respect and love for and who other than Pastor Adenike Olumide-Emmanuel. Ever since this decision, God has greatly used her to impact our marriage. I’ve become a better person and he has become a more understanding and vocal person. Now we talk about our differences till we come to an understanding, no more letting things slide and bottling our feelings. I am really grateful for the gift of Pastor Adenike. She has and still is who God is using to order our steps on this marital journey. We love and appreciate her so much and can only pray that God keeps her in great health and continues to bless her abundantly.
